Candidates will apply systemic approaches to close identified gaps in human performance.
What Is: This infographic was created to present a performance improvement case study for a peer-to-peer discussion.
Process: I began by reading and analyzing a case where organizational performance was severely lacking. I documented the key points and corresponding data and then presented my findings in an infographic format, which I created in Canva. The main advantage of this particular format was the ability to present otherwise dry information in an engaging and visually appealing way. One of the challenges was condensing a large amount of information while making sure that the key points were preserved. As the conclusion of my analysis, I presented the lessons learned from this particular case.
Connect: Analyzing this case study and creating a visual representation of the case and the lessons learned allowed me an opportunity to learn about and apply a systemic approach to close gaps in human performance. This case study was a necessary step in deepening my understanding of how the human performance improvement process worked.
What Is: This Detailed Design Document was a product of our group collaboration in creating an instructional program for teaching 3rd graders about the similarities and differences among plants, animals, and habitats in different parts of Georgia.
Process: When planning for our instructional program, our group first set a purpose for the program: to create an engaging web-based learning environment to close the identified learning gap. After administering pre-assessment (artifact 3), we developed a highly detailed plan that included an overview of our proposed program, an instructional alignment table, sequencing and pacing, and instructional resources. The most challenging aspect of this process was researching instructional resources and ensuring they aligned with the main goal and learning objectives. Despite this challenge, I truly enjoyed the process because it allowed me to use my creativity while anticipating tangible results at the conclusion of the program.
Connect: Planning the development of the web-based instructional program gave me an invaluable opportunity to learn about the critical steps needed to close an identified learning gap. This experience reinforced that careful, detailed planning is an essential component of any effort to address learning deficiencies effectively.
What Is: This artifact is a pre-assessment quiz that I created to gauge students' knowledge about the similarities and differences between plants, animals, and their habitats in different parts of Georgia.
Process: I used Google Forms to create this quiz. I began by identifying key vocabulary and concepts that 3rd-grade students were expected to know. I also had to research different habitats of the five regions of GA to identify which animals and plants the students were expected to know about. After developing questions for the quiz, I added the visuals that made this quiz more engaging for students.
Connect: This artifact was a tool to assess our students' knowledge and identify any learning gaps. As a result of the pre-assessment, our group determined that students were lacking relevant content knowledge. In order to close that performance gap, our group proceeded to the next step - planning the development of our web-based instructional program.
Learning how to identify and close the gaps in human performance was an immersive and highly engaging experience for me. While studying the case of the health organization seemed to be boring at first, it proved to be a very interesting and creative process. I am very proud of the artifact that I created as a result since I find it very effective in conveying all the key points of the case, along with my own reflection on the issue presented.
Creating a pre-assessment quiz was also a process I greatly enjoyed. It allowed me to use my creativity and work on this part of a group project individually. As a result of the pre-assessment, our group was able to develop a plan for a website that proved to be an effective program for 3rd graders later in the course. My collaboration with other team members was also very satisfying and presented an opportunity to be a part of a great team and exchange many ideas with my colleagues.
I see many applications for the skills I developed through this coursework. Identifying and addressing learning gaps is a vital part of my role as an ESE teacher, and I now feel better equipped to apply systemic approaches to support my students’ performance in everyday practice.
