Educators seek opportunities for leadership to support student empowerment and success and to improve teaching and learning.
What Is: This is a grant proposal that I developed as a final product after assessing technology needs at my school and identifying the most pressing need - lack of student devices in our PreK classes.
Process: The process started with developing an assessment to identify the most critical need for technology at my school. I interviewed various stakeholders, such as teachers, administrators, Media and IT Specialists, and analyzed their answers. Based on that data, I identified the most pressing technology need - the lack of student devices in our two PreK classes. To address that need, I developed this document, where I described the context, goals, objectives, and the implementation plan in order to secure funding for the devices.
Connect: Working on my grant proposal presented me with an opportunity to take initiative, collaborate with colleagues, and advocate for meaningful change. I had to take on a leadership role in trying to expand technology access and secure funding for the tablets. I also tried to address equity gaps in technology access for our youngest and neediest students, thus demonstrating leadership.
What Is: I created this video as a 2-minute elevator pitch aimed at potential donors to my project.
Process: After developing the above-shown Grant Proposal, I used Canva to design and record a video that would convince potential donors that my project was worth their attention and monetary contributions. In this video, I described my school and our students, reflecting on unequal student access to technology, particularly for our youngest students. I described my project and how it would benefit our students, presenting the project objectives and goals. As a final step, I presented the budget for my project.
Connect: This video demonstrates my leadership as it was part of my effort to advocate for equity in access to technology for all students and to seek resources to improve teaching and learning. By writing a grant proposal and creating and sharing the accompanying video, I took on a leadership role beyond my classroom. Designing and recording this video required me to communicate with various stakeholders, including potential donors outside my professional setting, in an effort to inspire support for an innovative solution.
Working on the Grant proposal and its accompanying video presented a new challenge for me, as I had never written a grant before. I learned a great deal about different components of a professionally written grant. Developing a grant proposal required careful planning, research, and communication with multiple stakeholders as I identified the most pressing technology needs at my school. I was able to try on a new leadership role, outside of my usual professional responsibilities, while designing the video provided me with an engaging and creative experience. Overall, creating both artifacts was an interesting and enlightening process that I plan on using in the future.
