Candidates will apply theories of change to introduce innovations into educational settings.
What Is: This Technology Integration Project was developed for an elementary school in Cobb County to explore the potential of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the school level to help personalize learning for all students.
Process: My teammate, employed by the client school, and I explored the advantages and drawbacks of using AI in an elementary school setting. Based on our findings, we developed a plan on how to effectively diffuse this innovation and adapt it to the elementary school environment. In order to provide a rationale for using this particular tool to tailor instruction to students' and the school's needs, we conducted an assessment and analyzed the input of key stakeholders of two elementary schools, one in Georgia and the other in Florida. Based on the results of this assessment, we created a step-by-step plan for technology integration, which included the following:
- evaluation of the current state of knowledge and usage of AI tools;
- creating a guiding coalition;
- training and supporting key stakeholders;
- promoting ethical use of AI;
- creating a cooperative learning community;
- developing an AI-enhanced toolbox;
- evaluating the effectiveness of the AI adoption process.
Connect: Working on this project was an immersive experience in assessing, analyzing, and synthesizing information, and planning for the adoption of an innovation in an educational organization. The process of forming a guiding coalition, providing training and support, promoting ethical practices, and fostering a cooperative learning community reflects a deliberate application of change theory to ensure the successful introduction and sustained use of Artificial Intelligence in the school environment.
What Is: This research article analysis was a precursor to the presented above Technology Integration Project. It involved finding and analyzing a research article on the innovation that our team planned to diffuse into an educational setting, and presenting key parts of the article in a pre-set template.
Process: I researched our chosen topic, AI in education, and located an article describing the inadequate attention given to the role of teachers in the adoption, pedagogical use, and development of AI. I presented my analysis of the article by describing the background information presented in the article, he purpose of the study, research questions, methods and research design, data collection, implications, and limitations of the study.
Connect: My work on this research article analysis provided a starting point for understanding the challenges and opportunities of adopting AI in schools. By examining how the article highlighted the inadequate role of teachers in the integration of AI, I was able to learn about critical factors that influence the success of innovation adoption efforts. This analysis informed our Technology Integration Project by emphasizing the importance of teacher involvement, professional development, and planning for innovation sustainability by applying change theory while diffusing innovative technologies.
What Is: This is a part of the Reading Journal that I used to reflect my thoughts on the readings assigned in the course for Modules 4-6. These particular modules included readings on the theories of change, models of innovation adoption, and sustainability in education. This artifact captures both theoretical foundations and practical strategies for adopting and sustaining educational innovations.
Process: The process involved reading, watching videos, analyzing information, and presenting key takeaways from a variety of works by authors such as Gura, Rogers, Fullan, and Kotter, along with reviews of models like CBAM and the Levels of Use framework.
Connect: This artifact directly connects to the learning outcome of applying theories of change to introduce innovations into educational settings. Analyzing change models and frameworks provided a theoretical foundation for my Technology Integration Project. While using the Reading Journal, I synthesized research on instructional technology and educational change to inform my next steps for successful technology integration in an educational setting.
My coursework in MEDT 8461 was truly illuminating on the process of diffusion of innovations. Before taking this class, I only had a general idea about adopting instructional technology in a school setting. The process of analyzing information presented in the readings and multimedia resources provided me with a plethora of information on both the theoretical foundation and practical frameworks that go into a successful technology integration process. While working on our Technology Integration Project, I had a great opportunity to learn about all the steps necessary for the adoption process, from researching the innovation, assessing the context and the perspectives of the potential adopters, to practical implementation of the innovation and ensuring its continuous success. Now, I feel confident in my ability to be a change agent at my school and lead the technology adoption process.
